Today, February 15, a section of a seaside cliff near Gdynia Orlowo was toppled. An operator from our MegaDrone team went to the site to see from the air what the area looks like after tons of sand slid into the sea. The incident is believed to have occurred after 1 p.m. Firefighters estimate that more than 1,000 m3 of sand slid. In addition to the fire department, the Search and Rescue Group was also on the scene, fortunately no one was injured.
The landslide site is a popular walking route for residents of Gdynia. Drone shots show that sand has reached the water, but the road has not been plugged. The Fire Department reports that the landslide site occupies about 40 meters of Gdynia beach. A part of the cliff near the pier in Orlowo measures about 5 meters, so the tons of sand lying on the beach are clearly visible from aerial shots taken with a drone.
On MegaDrone's Facebook fanpage, we broadcast a LIVE VIDEO from the scene. The cliff was no longer slipping at this point and there were quite a few people walking on the site. The operator transmitted the event with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional model. This is an older generation of drones from DJI. His younger brother Phantom 4 Pro or Advanced would probably perform better in this task, if only because of its greater reach. Although it must be admitted that our distinguished Phantom 3 managed without any problems. The drone took off from the pier, rather than directly at the landslide, so range mattered.
Drones are increasingly helping in various areas of life and economy. This time, he helped fix the site of a broken section of the cliff in Gdynia Orlowo. But drones are also used for rescue operations, environmental and property protection, as well as inspection. These are just some of the examples of drone use. Soon maybe every journalist will carry a handheld drone like, np. Mavic Air or DJI Spark, which he will be able to take out of his bag at any time and immortalize the event in question. The drones listed weigh less than 0.6 kg, so we don't need any additional approvals to fly in the city. However, remember to keep safe distances from people and buildings. We would also like to remind you that in order to use a drone for commercial purposes (even when not invoicing, but using it for work) you need a UAV license.
