DJI Care Refresh - how to activate drone insurance after 48 hours

Note! As of October 2020, the rules for filming have changed! We write off the new rules in the article Activation of DJI Care insurance after 48 hours - verification video - new rules.

Insurance DJI Care Refresh is the most commonly purchased product for a drone. It appears in almost every order for the Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic Mini submitted in our online store. No wonder - it keeps our drone insured against accidents caused by fortuitous factors beyond our control (e.g. snagging a twig moving in the wind, an attack by a seagull) or completely dependent on us. Under the policy, we are favored with two replacements for new equipment, the cost of which is nominal relative to the value of the drone.

We wrote more about the benefits of participating in insurance and how to activate it here.

As standard, we can insure our drone up to 48 hours after activation. What if we miss the moment? Or if the drone has been lying in the closet for several months, is in perfect condition and we want to make our flights more comfortable?

You can still activate DJI Care Refresh insurance!

How to activate DJI Care Refresh insurance after 48 hours of drone activation?

First of all, activating DJI Care after 48h is not as trivial as the standard bundling of a drone with a policy. It is also not impracticable, but in this case we have to do more than just enter the serial number and activation code on the indicated page.

First of all, after 48h DJI Care can only be activated by contacting the manufacturer first. Our task is to capture a recording documenting the impeccable condition of our drone.

How to prepare and send a video for DJI Care activation after 48h?

  1. Prepare enough space in a bright open space.
  2. Remember to keep the video clear and sharp.
  3. In the video, you should include a frame with the drone, the controller and a view of the app on the mobile device at the same time.
  4. Do not process the finished recording - processed recordings will not pass verification.
  5. Make sure that the link to your YouTube recording will be valid for 6 months. If, upon verification, the link turns out to be invalid, you will have to provide a new recording of the same drone within 3 days of receiving the message from DJI.
  6. Keep a copy of the recording after uploading it to the site: https://repair.dji.com/en/djicare/customerupload
  7. On the aforementioned page, check the box indicating that you have read the instructions for the verification video and agree to the terms and conditions contained therein and click 'SUBMIT'
  8. We fill out a short form with details about the device - name, series and serial number of the drone and gimbal. At the very bottom we paste the link to our YouTube video and click 'Submit' again.
  9. Within 3 days, we receive a response from DJI via email, which is linked to our account in the DJI app.

What the video needed to activate DJI Care after 48h should contain?

On the aforementioned page is uploaded a sample video that meets DJI's requirements for insurance activation. The following describes the next steps involved.

DJI Care insurance after 48h - step-by-step video

  1. Capturing the serial numbers of the drone and gimbal. Make sure both numbers are legible.
  2. Turn on the controller and battery in the drone.
  3. Turn on the DJI GO 4 or DJI Fly app and calibrate the compass.
  4. Format the SD card using the application.
  5. Check IMU.
  6. Demonstrate the movements of the gimbal in the pitch axis- up, down and rotation left and right.
  7. Using a combination of sticks, start the engines
  8. Ascend to a height of approx. 1.2 m at a distance of approx. 6 m and hover. For the Inspire version, raise the chassis.
  9. Move up, down, forward, backward and perform clockwise and counterclockwise rotation.
  10. Using the controller, record a few seconds of video and using the 'Playback' button, check the recording.
  11. Fly to a high altitude (approx. 20 m).

  13. For the Inspire series, perform a landing gear landing test by lowering the landing gear.
  14. Land the drone, turn off the battery, and then turn off the controller.
  15. Finish recording your video.

Once your video is approved, DJI pulls the insurance implication lock from your drone's serial code. Now you can assign the DJI Care code via the site https://service.dji.com/care/active .
