Its purpose is to to limit the rate of descent in the event of an emergency, such as a serious flight anomaly or loss of control of the aircraft. In the event of a threat, the system can automatically shut down the engines, deploy the parachute, and bring the drone safely back to the ground with a controlled rate of descent. After the parachute opens the descent speed does not exceed 5 m/s, and the system's response time is a maximum of 600 ms.

Automatic Parachute Deployment

One of the key features of of the AP100 is the ability to automatically deploy the parachute. Manual startup by the operator

No further flights should be conducted until the inspection is complete.

Even if the parachute has never been deployed, DJI recommends having it inspection every 3–6 months. In addition, the manufacturer recommends replacing the system 3 years after activation to maintain full operational effectiveness and the highest level of safety, even if the self-tests do not indicate any abnormalities.

Audible and visual alarm upon activation

When the DJI AP100 parachute is deployed, it triggers an audible alarm and a visual signal, that make it easier to locate a drone after an emergency landing. This is particularly useful during operations conducted in tall vegetation, in large industrial areas, or in other expansive areas where locating the machine might take longer. The alarm can continue to operate for up to about an hour after it is activated.

Although this is an additional feature, in practice it can significantly reduce the time it takes to locate a drone after a malfunction. It allows for faster securing of the landing site and assessment of the condition of the platform itself, the payload, and the parachute system before taking further action.
