A2 subcategory
Competencies in the open category, useful for operations with C2 class drones. This is a natural step for people who want to expand their capabilities after A1/A3 and organise their theoretical knowledge.
Training, exams and practical experience for unmanned aircraft pilots. We help you choose the right path: A2, STS-01 and STS-02 — for private users, companies, services and institutions.
VLOS and BVLOS describe the way operations are performed, not separate European licences. Therefore, this page uses the current terminology of competencies and scenarios: A2, STS-01 and STS-02, while the VLOS/BVLOS abbreviations clarify the type of flight.
From open category flights to standard scenarios in the specific category. Below we show the differences in a simple, practical way.
Competencies in the open category, useful for operations with C2 class drones. This is a natural step for people who want to expand their capabilities after A1/A3 and organise their theoretical knowledge.
Visual line of sight operations in the specific category using C5 class UAVs over a controlled ground area. The scenario may include populated environments after meeting all required conditions.
A pathway for operations beyond visual line of sight performed according to STS-02 requirements. Includes C6 class UAVs, a controlled ground area and requirements regarding airspace observers.
The above comparison is for informational purposes only. The possibility of performing a specific operation also depends on current legal requirements, conditions of a given scenario, geographical zone and parameters of the UAV being used.
The UAV class is not a pilot licence, but it helps determine in which category and scenario a given device may be used. The version, class marking and configuration of a specific unit matter.
In the open category, C2 class is directly connected with the A2 subcategory. It is a common choice for professional VLOS operations.
C5 class is intended for STS-01 scenario operations, meaning VLOS flights in the specific category after meeting all scenario requirements.
This is important, for example, with DJI Matrice 4TD: the model may appear in C2, C5 or C6 configuration. The C6 configuration is connected with the STS-02 pathway and BVLOS operations.
The scope is based on theoretical training, exam preparation, field practice and product training using the equipment.
For pilots who want to develop their competencies in the open category and prepare for the A2 exam.
Theoretical preparation on the e-learning platform.
Preparation and approach to the A2 theoretical exam according to the selected option.
Field practice — approximately 4 hours according to the current MEGADRON programme.
Product training with owned or newly implemented UAV equipment.
For people planning VLOS operations in the STS-01 standard scenario and work in more demanding operational environments.
Theoretical preparation covering A2/STS scope and work in the specific category.
Preparation for the theoretical exam in the relevant competency scope.
Practical field training — approximately 6 hours in the current programme.
Product training and discussion of operational procedures.
The widest option for pilots who also want to prepare for BVLOS operations performed according to STS-02 requirements.
Comprehensive theoretical preparation for A2 and STS competencies.
Preparation for the A2/STS exam according to the selected option.
Field practice covering VLOS procedures and elements of BVLOS operation preparation.
Product training: configuration, mission planning and safe UAV operation.
The goal of the training is to prepare the pilot for conscious drone operation — from assessing the flight location and pre-flight procedures to completing the mission and safely ending the operation.
Work on operation preparation, situational awareness, UAV positioning and procedures used by pilots during real field tasks.
Route planning, emergency procedures, teamwork and preparation for operations where the pilot does not maintain direct visual contact with the UAV.
MEGADRON training methodology
We combine the programme with practical use of the equipment. If the training is part of implementing a specific drone system, we can also cover configuration, sensors and scenarios relevant to your industry.
E-learning platform and structured theoretical preparation.
Field practice conducted under instructor supervision.
Product training: activation, configuration and overview of UAV functions.
Exercises based on real tasks: observation, inspection, mission planning and emergency procedures.
Post-training support in case of questions regarding equipment and its practical use.
For teams, we can combine pilot competencies with implementation of a specific UAV platform and scenarios relevant to everyday operations.
Search, observation and patrol flights using RGB cameras, thermal imaging and laser rangefinders.
Planning automated missions and routes over large areas.
Complete training on a purchased or already owned drone system.
Possibility of conducting training at a location agreed with the client and setting a date for a group.
Implementation for a volunteer fire brigade can combine pilot competencies with thermal imaging operation, search mission planning and work with equipment later used during operations.
If you do not know where to start, we will help choose the right path based on your experience, equipment and type of operation.
We determine whether you need A2, STS-01, STS-02 or product training without extending competencies.
You receive access to materials and prepare for the relevant theoretical exam.
You practise procedures, piloting and field tasks under instructor supervision.
We go through UAV configuration, system functions and practical use in your operations.
The most important points at a glance. If you have any questions, contact us — we will help choose the right option for your planned operations.
No. VLOS means an operation within visual line of sight, while BVLOS means an operation beyond visual line of sight. In the current European system, competencies and scenarios are described, among others, as A2, STS-01 and STS-02.
A1/A3 is the foundation for further competency development. When qualifying a participant, we always verify what is missing and in what order it is best to complete the entire process.
Yes — MEGADRON training options combine theoretical preparation with field practice. We can also include product training for a specific UAV used by the participant or organisation.
Yes. The scope can be adapted to the group, equipment and application. For team implementations, training can also be carried out at a location agreed with the client.
No. STS-02 is a specific standard scenario and the operation must meet its requirements. Other types of BVLOS operations may require a different legal basis or additional authorisation.
If you are not sure which option is right for you, write or call us. We will adapt the training scope to your plans, experience and equipment.
